I was lucky enough to be treated to a pair of Compositi Premium Customizable stirrups for my birthday, so I thought I’d share with you how I found them…
To be completely honest, I hadn’t heard of the brand before I got these, however I had seen lots of similar, lightweight plastic stirrups at shows and had always fancied a pair. I love the modern showjumper look (even if I am certainly not one!) and have always thought that plastic stirrups look pretty streamlined.
After further research, it turns out that Compositi have been around since the early 80s and were the first to make a plastic stirrup. I think the model I have (the Premium Customizable) is intended for jumping and the idea is based around a sleek design and the ability to change the tread for one of 14 different colours.
My first impression when I opened them was how light they were! Yet they still felt robust and strong. I couldn’t wait to try them.
I tried my stirrups in my weekly flat lesson and they were great. The tread is really grippy and almost has a spring to it and I found this really shock absorbing whilst riding. The ridges on the tread are quite deep and I found that this gave me really good grip and control. Compared to my regular stirrups, my Compositi are much wider and deeper, which I really enjoyed. I found them to be stable and secure whilst jumping and on the flat and just plain comfortable when hacking.
I absolutely love the range of colours available and am going to investigate whether I can buy the treads separately so I can alternate. A fellow hacker did ask me whether they were specifically hi-vis hacking stirrups. I hadn’t even considered this, but you do get a small flash of bright pink either side of your boot when in the stirrup. I mean, it’s not super obvious, but when on the roads any extra visibility is welcome!
One last point that I have found with these is that they are super easy to clean. As they are all plastic, a quick rinse was all that was needed to restore these back to brand-new quality. I was concerned that such a light coloured tread would stain, but so far it hasn’t at all.
Obviously these were a present, so I didn’t spend my own hard-earned cash on them. However, I’m super pleased that somebody else did and I would highly recommend them and would not hesitate to buy another pair. I think they are around the £20 mark too, so I would consider these an absolute bargain and they definitely get the alifemorehorsey approval!
